CLUSTER — Cairo Lab for Urban Studies, Training and Environmental Research — was founded in 2011 in Downtown Cairo, as a platform for urban research, architecture, art, and design initiatives. CLUSTER engages with critical discourse while being grounded in practice, with an emphasis on participatory design processes.
At Blue Fish we design solutions that unlock national art and craft potentials through the development of entrepreneurial and technical skills and by building bridges for cultural understanding to strengthen cultural diversity using the very tools that challenge it: technology and globalization.
THINK TANGER is a cultural platform for the exploration of urban challenges specific to the city of Tangier. It serves as a forum for emphasizing and tackling the social and spatial impact of urban matters through projects at the intersection of visual arts, design, participative research, and urban practices.
The Foundation supports research, publication, and exhibition initiatives, and regularly organizes debates, symposiums, and seminars. It assists artists with production and support through residencies and workshops, and develops partnerships and exchanges with international cultural actors to promote Tunisia as a hub for contemporary art.
This project is an extension of CLUSTER’s ongoing regional programs, building on its extensive experience in mapping urban initiatives and tangible heritage, and in the development of networking and knowledge dissemination platforms in Cairo, Alexandria, Beirut, and Amman. The project aims to expand CLUSTER’s flagship regional platforms to additional North African cities in Tunisia and Morocco through workshops and trainings in partnership with three local organizations: the Creative Urban Initiatives Platform (CUIP), the Public Inter-Libraries Online Technology platform (PILOT), and the Critical Arabic Urban Lexicon (CAUL).
The main goal of this project is to develop regional platforms for networking, collaboration, and knowledge dissemination. By expanding mapping initiatives across North Africa, the project aims to strengthen networks for long-term collaboration between Egypt, the Levant, and North Africa.
The expansion into North African cities does not only increase the breadth of these initiatives’ mandate but also contributes to their development. The project recognizes the
capacities and skills of local initiatives and proposes to develop tools and methodologies already in place in Cairo, Amman, and Beirut to strengthen exchange and collaboration within the region.
